Microfluidic Chambers for Studies of Confined Superfluid He-3

We have studied superfluid helium-3 (He-3) confined to submicron slab geometries inside nanofabricated, microfluidic chambers. Two separate techniques were used to study the He-3 inside the chambers; nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and the torsional oscillator (TO). The NMR studies have shown a significant modification to the superfluid He-3 phase diagram as a result of the confinement, whereas the torsion pendulum studies have observed a decoupling of the fluid in the normal state, thus preventing study of the superfluid state so far. We review recent experiments in which superfluid 3He has been studied under highly controlled confinement in nanofluidic sample chambers. We discuss the experimental challenges and their resolution.
